History
An architectural gem from the 19th century, wrapped in peace and greenery
The first origins of the castle date back to the 17th century and they are part of the strongholds of Touraine. An original building was located closer to the Breuil stream and closer to the current ruins of the Breuil mill.
In the middle of the 19th century, the current castle was built on the site where it stands today. It overlooks the wooded countryside of Touraine and is located in the middle of a landscape of hills, forests, ponds, in a green and bucolic sweetness in the immediate vicinity of the village of Mazières-de-Touraine.
In the middle of the 19th century, Édouard Ourliac, novelist and short story writer, resided there. Friend of Gérard de Nerval and Honoré de Balzac, he was the author, in 1844, of a book entitled “Nouvelles diverses” (New Diverse) in which he described the customs of the local people.
After the acquisition of the castle in the 1960s by the Charon family, the castle was completely rebuilt and renovated. The views of the castle on the north and south sides have been completely changed and renovated in the “classical” style, which has led to the castle looking different today than at the beginning of the last century.
The castle has unfortunately been less and less inhabited since the end of the 1980s and when it was put up for sale a few years ago it was in great need of renovation.
John and Marc Blontrock-van Beek, passionate about classic residences, history and decoration, were seduced by this residence and decided to bring it back to life by opening it to the public and began the restoration of the castle themselves.
Little by little, the appearance of the castle was changed again by renovating and replacing all the shutters of the castle. A kitchen has been reinstalled. The renovation of the large living room began at the end of 2021. Subsequently, the dining room is maintained, and after the huge entrance hall with its double the main staircase. It has received a fresh coat of paint and the beautiful details of the staircase are now accentuated.
In 2022 the renovation of the rooms was launched and two completely new bathrooms were created. Thus, all the spaces intended to receive guests have been renovated.
